About AD Kids
A parents makeover to stop back talk
Back talk is learned -- and kids will keep using it when they know it works. So never give in to kids' disrespectful behavior. Instead, use these steps to stop back talk, and then be relentless until it does stop. Commit immediately to stopping this behavior. Write a letter to yourself stating your commitment and read it often.

Identify how you typically respond to your kid's back talk. Ask yourself why isn't it working. Reread the four steps to squelching talking back. If possible, discuss them with your spouse or another parent. Now develop a plan to end it. Pass on your plan so everyone is on board together.

Recognize that in most cases, step one and two are mandatory for behavior makeovers. If step one and two successfully eliminate your kid's back talk, then skip to step four. If not, try step three and set consequences that are appropriate for your child. Then apply it each time your kid back talks.

Keep up with your plan until you see change -- and that's usually three weeks. Track the behavior on a calendar to see if your plan is working and the back talk subsides. Be consistent and do not give in.

Boys Talk Later Than Girls
Society makes us believe that we need to be physical with boys and soft and gentle with girls. So we have a tendency to wrestle with boys while we sit quietly and talk to girls. If a child is more active, they may not spend as much time focusing on their language development. At about 18 to 24 months, a toddler can go through a motor development stage while their language appears stagnant.

What to do:
Take this opportunity to encourage language while expanding motor skills. As your toddler is running and jumping around the backyard say, "You're a fast runner. Look how high you can jump. Let's jump, jump, jump." Kicking a ball with your child is a great way to have them active in the talking process. Get ready to roll the ball to your toddler and say, "Tell Daddy, 'Roll the ball.'" This activity will get your toddler eager to talk because he wants to kick the ball. Using toys/play is a great way to reinforce talking.

News with AD Kids: No Additives Please
Which baby foods? A decade ago, nutritionists called attention to the fact that some commercial baby foods contained food additives, sugar and salt. To their credit, the baby food manufacturers responded by eliminating unnecessary additives from most of their products. As a result, today's baby foods contain no added salt and little or no sugar.

Unless your baby is going to eat the entire contents of a jar of baby food at one mealtime, it is best not to feed directly from the jar. And be careful not to store an opened baby food jar in the refrigerator for more than two days.

"The survey results indicate that it is more important than ever for us to focus our efforts on educating parents of young children about stuttering," says Jane Fraser, president of The Stuttering Foundation. "With early detection and intervention, stuttering in young children can almost always be overcome. It is crucial that parents become informed."

According to the survey, 33 percent of those surveyed said they would correct a child who is stuttering or that they would finish the child's sentences. "Parents should realize that the way they react to stuttering plays an important role in the child's speech development," says Lisa Scott Trautman, Ph.D., assistant professor of speech-language pathology at Florida State University. "If a child senses frustration and impatience when he speaks, his concerns about talking will increase."

According to experts, parents should allow the child to complete his thoughts without interruptions or corrections and they say that patient, attentive listening is critical.

News with David Lurino: 8 to 12 Months
When your baby starts to crawl, around the 8-month mark, it's time to think about setting limits. Suddenly everything -- from the knickknacks on your side table to those rolls of toilet paper under the bathroom sink -- are big no-nos.

A child this age only wants to explore (he has no concept of what he should or shouldn't do), so if you don't want him to touch something, place it out of his reach through childproofing and let child-friendly items take center stage. Experts say this is the best way to help your child stay out of trouble and makes it a lot easier to follow the rules.

Of course, many of us merely say no when we catch our little ones getting into mischief. Unfortunately, it's not a reliable discipline method for kids this age. Your child can comprehend by the tone of your voice that "no" means something different from "I love you," but she doesn't understand the real meaning of the word. Furthermore, she doesn't have the self-control to heed your request.

Use other techniques to reinforce the lesson that some things are off-limits, as Cristina Soto of New York City does. "Starting at around 8 or 9 months, every time my daughter Sonia got near an outlet, I'd say 'Aah aaah!' in a playfully scary voice so she'd stop and look at me," says Soto. "I kept doing it. After a while she'd cruise over to an outlet, point, and say, 'Aah aaah!' to me."

4 Strategies for Parents

All of this inevitably leads to some very beastly -- but wholly necessary -- outbursts. "Your toddler's constant 'no's,' arguments, and refusals to cooperate are a necessary part of learning to separate from parents. It's a good thing," says Mark Goldstein, PhD, a clinical child psychologist in private practice in Chicago. The more your child focuses on different tasks, fails, then tries again, the more he learns about problem-solving and the more confident he will become at tackling new endeavors.

That's all well and good, but how do you handle a toddler who seems destined to end up either in the ER or in an anger management program? With a lot of patience and the following strategies.

Control the environment. Fend off tantrums and encourage your child's explorations by making your home safe and accessible for your child. Put tempting breakables out of his reach, cover electrical sockets, and place baby gates in the doorways of rooms that are off-limits. If, for example, you spend lots of time together in the kitchen, place toddler-friendly pots and pans in low drawers he can reach. This approach solves several problems: You won't have to scream "No!" all the time, you won't break your toddler's intrepid spirit, nothing will get broken, and your little one will be less likely to get hurt.

What Should You Do?
When a child is trying to tell you something and begins stuttering, your first reaction might be to tell them to slow down and relax. In fact, this is what most people would do, according to a new survey by The Stuttering Foundation. Leading experts, however, say that reaction can aggravate the problem.

In the national survey of 1,000 adults, The Stuttering Foundation found that nearly 90 percent of the adults would say "slow down and relax" to a child who begins to stutter. But experts say that such simplistic advice will not help stop stuttering and may actually frustrate a child who stutters.

Try to remember that slowing and relaxing your own speaking style is much more helpful than telling the child to slow down, say Dr. Guitar and Dr. Conture.

Waving Bye-Bye
For the first time, baby may be able to follow a simple instruction such as 'Wave bye-bye,' 'Bring me the teddy bear,' 'Stop that' or 'Kiss me.' This shows that your baby has learned not only separate words and their meanings but can understand a whole idea expressed in words. This is an important milestone in language development, and it is a good sign that your baby will be talking before you know it.
